Essay / What does reality TV do to women? - 656
When the concept of reality television was first introduced, there were only 4 reality television shows on the air. In 2010, that number jumped to 320. Reality shows have become one of the most promising industries in media entertainment. Although many people scoff at the idea of reality TV shows, the truth is that most of us still enjoy watching them. Some of the most popular shows include American Idol, The Biggest Loser and Jersey Shore. These shows cover a range of topics, from aspiring singers to aspiring dancers, from passionate partygoers to sexy housewives, and from teen moms to child beauty pageants. Statistics have shown that reality TV shows seem to appeal more to women than men. The table below clearly shows that when it comes to frequency of reality TV viewing, women consistently outnumber their male counterparts in every category except the 25 age group. at 34 years old. While many of these girls and women think of the reality of TV shows simply being mindless entertainment, they are unaware that they could still be negatively affected. Take for example the ever-popular show “Jersey Shore,” which aired for 6 seasons. The show is one where the audience follows the lives of a carefully selected group of people with big personalities, much of which involves snotty arguments, promiscuous activities, and partying. Female stars, with their diva attitudes and brassy fashion, are always a topic of conversation among teenage girls watching them at home. Reality TV shows actually have the potential to damage a woman's image. Many reality shows perpetuate a mean girl stereotype and influence young girls and even older women to become desperate housewives or socialites. On top of that, reality shows like “The Bachelor” indirectly encourage girls and women to have a more superficial mind. They get used to the idea that money is everything; such that for a man to be worth having, he must be rich and “sexy”. To summarize, reality TV shows have negative effects on women; they damage young women's self-image and destroy their moral values. Women today are bombarded with media, whether it's reality TV, social media sites or others. They are consumed by fashion and celebrity obsessed pop culture, when in reality we need more Hillary Clintons and JK Rowlings in our society. While it would be inappropriate to tell girls and women to avoid reality shows altogether, it would be wise for them to know what they're getting into when they watch them..
