The medical use of cannabis has long been debated in the United States. Some states, like Colorado, have even bypassed federal law to legalize medical cannabis. Numerous studies have not only suggested, but proven, the incredible medical benefit of cannabinoids. Cannabis is completely safe in moderation and has less serious long-term side effects than many medications treating similar conditions. With restriction and respect, medical cannabis should be legalized for those who have a legitimate health condition and can obtain a medical license to use cannabis for said health condition. Medical marijuana, or medical cannabis, has been used for its medicinal properties for years. Dr. Laura M. Borgelt is a board-certified pharmacotherapy specialist currently teaching at the University of Colorado, Aurora, Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Dr. Borgelt is currently a clinical pharmacy specialist at the University of Colorado AF Williams Family Medicine Center (Borgelt 195). Medical cannabis can create various pharmacological responses based on formulation, cannabinoid compounds in relation to their cannabinoid receptors, and patient characteristics. . Common medications created by the properties of cannabis include Dronabinol and Nabilone. These medications are used without serious side effects for the treatment of nausea and vomiting associated with cancer chemotherapy, involuntary anorexia associated with patients who have acquired immunodeficiency syndrome, and weight gain in those who suffer from of HIV/AIDS (Borgelt 208).Although stimulation of hunger and relief of nausea are very positive properties, muscle p...... middle of paper ......is. Also regarding the argument of illegal sales between those who hold a medical cannabis license and those who do not, there should be a serious restriction put in place, such as retrieving the medical cannabis license from the patient for an extended period of time, or a heavy fine if one has not respected the law on the use of medical cannabis (Bridge Too Far). Patients with debilitating illnesses should not have to suffer. Patients who also take large amounts of medications to feel comfortable in their bodies should not have to worry about serious long-term side effects from their comfort medications. With restriction and respect, the medical use of cannabis should be legalized for those with legitimate health concerns. Using an effective drug without great risk is a goal in the medical field that can be easily achieved..
