Investigate some of the reasons why individuals start smoking and why might people continue to smoke?1. Did you know that one in ten adult smokers die from tobacco-related illnesses? But people still smoke. Why would they continue to smoke even if they know the effects? Actually, why do they start? One reason given is the “cool” look you get from smoking. We have movies to blame for this, but that still doesn't mean it should be done. Peer pressure plays a big role in teenagers' lives and most children are very sensitive to it. These are just some of the many reasons people start smoking. There is also a sense of rebellion that drives teenagers to smoke to show that they do not care about rules or laws. There is also mental dependence (craving the “after-meal”, e.g. having one after lunch or during work, mainly where and when you smoked), physical dependence (the addictive substance as nicotine, in itself harmless but which generally makes you want to smoke) and stress. Stress is the biggest factor because smoking a cigarette relaxes many people and quells their urge to smoke one. There is also the most important factor, nicotine, which is the addictive substance in a cigarette. This is one of the main reasons why people continue to smoke because it is very difficult to quit an addiction.2. Study the short- and long-term health effects of smoking.
