  • Essay / Integrity of characters in different literary works

IntegrityIntegrity is the basis of one's actions on an internally consistent framework of principles. This means that one who has integrity bases his actions on a moral code of honor, character, strength and courage. These principles guide a character's motivations and cause, putting aside public image to lead a life of chivalry and conviction. An example is Willie Bodega from Bodega Dreams by Ernesto QuiƱonez. Although Willie's means are questionable, he strives to improve the Spanish Harlem neighborhood by improving abandoned and damaged apartments. Then there's John Proctor from Arthur Miller's The Crucible. Proctor refuses to provide a false confession, this is a true religious and personal position. By refusing to give up his personal integrity, Proctor proclaims his belief that such integrity will land him in heaven. Finally, there's Holden Caulfield from JD Salinger's Catcher in the Rye. However, Holden displays the intrinsic opposite of integrity by playing a hypocrite. Willie Bodega and John Proctor embody the principles of integrity and demonstrate it through their actions. However, Holden Caulfield shows his deception and godlessness through his constant dishonesty and hypocrisy. First, there is Willie Bodega who is known throughout Spanish Harlem for getting someone a job or putting them in an apartment for cheap rent. He knows that since he has succeeded in the neighborhood where he grew up, he needs to give back. Willie achieves this by renovating run-down apartments into decent housing for good people. Although these renovations are financed by shady drug deals, Willie is truly doing it for the good of Spanish Harlem. In this, Willie's integrity truly shines among his actions. Another example of this...... middle of paper ......e. Spencer attempted to discuss the document Holden had written for him and the causes of Holden's expulsion. However, Holden doesn't respect what Mr. Spencer had to say. In fact, he doesn't even listen. Showing how disrespectful is completely ignoring those who are genuinely trying to help you defines Holden as a deceptive hypocrite. Ernesto QuiƱonez and Arthur Miller brilliantly create characters who, despite their personal imperfections, let their integrity shine through their actions. Willie Bodega and John Proctor embody the principles of integrity and display it through their actions for the good of their communities. However, JD Salinger also meticulously produces a flawed person who, through his efforts, descends into mental instability. Holden Caulfield shows his deception and godlessness through his constant dishonesty and hypocrisy.
