Essay / Was Hamlet a hero? - 1136
HamletIs Hamlet heroic? Hamlet, the main character of Shakespeare's famous play Hamlet, is an angry man who dazzles audiences with his wicked spirit and desire for revenge. He seems crazy throughout the play, leaving the audience with a feeling of uncertainty about him. The answer to the question of whether Hamlet was mad or not plays a key role in answering our main question: Is Hamlet heroic? Only when it is known whether Hamlet is mad or not can a person discover or deny the heroism of his actions. So is Hamlet crazy? From the beginning, Hamlet exhibits very disturbed characteristics. In Act I, scene two, Hamlet expresses his melancholy: “Oh, if this flesh too, too defiled, would melt, thaw and dissolve into dew! Or that your Lord had not fixed his canon against self-mutilation! » (I. ii. 129-132). Hamlet talks about his feelings, telling us how he wishes to die because of his grief. He recently lost his father, and within a month his mother remarried his uncle. Hamlet feels lost and no one understands. Confused by his mother's incestuous behavior and hasty marriage, Hamlet believes that there has been foul play among him. Upon learning of the appearance of his father's ghost, he is certain that a betrayal is hidden somewhere. He declares: “The spirit of my father in arms! All is not well; I doubt a criminal act: » (I, iii, 253-254). The following night, he meets the ghost and he tells Hamlet that he has been murdered and that "the serpent that stole your father's life now wears his crown" (I, v, 37-38), then he asks Hamlet: “Let the ghost not the royal bed of Denmark be a sofa for luxury and cursed incest” (I. v. 82-83). Hamlet immediately agreed to avenge his father and his country. From this point on, Hamlet is in the middle of paper......after achieving his goals, Hamlet dies. Hamlet seemed like a sane man with the knowledge to make everyone think he was crazy. He showed his sanity through his ability to control himself and make reasonable decisions even in the face of great opportunities. If Hamlet was sane, as the information I gathered from the text suggests, then his actions prove that he is more than just heroic. A man who allows his father's brother to murder his father for so long, because of his fear of speaking, is not heroic. He's a coward. A noble, heroic man would fight for what is right, even if it meant his own life might be lost. Hamlet only acted on his father's behalf when he knew his life was wasted anyway. Before that, he was just contemplating the situation and doing nothing. A hero is a man of noble thought and action, not just thought. Works Cited Shakespeare, Willaim. Hamlet.
