Throughout the course of history, the gun control debate has been an issue that has been addressed since the American colonial era and which is also contested today. The United States currently holds more than 200 million guns and has weaker gun laws than other developed countries, largely because the Supreme Court has upheld the right to gun control. Little action was taken until numerous shootings and gun-related incidents occurred. These incidents have sparked calls for gun control laws, but the Supreme Court opposes them. Although the Supreme Court considers it unnecessary to have them, recent tragedies and past examples clearly support the implication of gun control laws. The Second Amendment, ratified in 1791, grants citizens the right to bear arms and has been in existence as long as the Constitution itself. The Supreme Court rejected the adoption of gun control laws and ruled that federal law does not require restrictions on gun ownership under the Second Amendment in District of Columbia v. Heller in 2008. However, the assassinations of key political figures such as John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King Jr., and Robert F. Kennedy led Congress to pass a number of acts and laws banning assault weapons federal and restricting the importation and sale of firearms.
