Essay / Comparing Designers - 866
For my comparison article I had a really hard time deciding who I could really compare mine to, the work I do mostly consists of 2D elements printed onto a 3D object , focusing primarily on clothing design. The majority of my work is done for packaging or designing t-shirts for bands. There are many designers, mostly self-taught, working in the clothing design market, and so many people choosing someone to compare my work to is not easy. Graphic designer Kelly Scott Orr is currently the in-house designer for Drive Thru Records based in Los Angeles, this label essentially established the pop punk genre that is still popular today. He also owns and designs clothing for his company Burn This Forever, is part of the band Teen Hearts, and does commission work for clients. The reason I chose Kelly is because he and I share a similar design style and our designs are aimed at a younger demographic. Throughout this article, I will compare and contrast the social, visual, and physical elements of my clothing designs with hers. Socially, our designs share the idea that these shirts are designed to be a salable product that will appeal to a certain demographic of young people, some would say. this demographic would be made up of men and women between the ages of 12 and 25 who practice a specific genre of music and style somewhat associated with the hipster culture that is popular today. The success of these designs relies on creating visually appealing graphic elements related to type, primarily company or group identity, and highly saturated hues. We both share the desire to start our own business and promote the brand; this can be seen in the attached Burn This Forever photo, as well as on my Nevernood clothing line. On the other hand, my work mainly consists of drawings on paper......t, most of my creations could be considered creations on a budget consisting mainly of drawings in 2 colors (3). There is some confusion in Kelly's creations, which gives the viewer plenty to look at and understand; my designs tend to be more minimalist, with the company name being the most present element of the design. When it comes to the physical aspects of our work, the designs are very similar. They are made in programs such as Adobe Illustrator and Adobe Photoshop. They are printed using the same screen printing method with the same plastic ink. Designs are printed on clothing consisting primarily of t-shirts and hooded sweatshirts, but may include a number of 3D objects. I'm not really sure how the physical elements of this contrast, as they are basically 2D designs printed on a 3D form of clothing and printed the same way with the same medium..
