What did Jesus' death and resurrection accomplish? In order to understand the meaning of Jesus' death and resurrection, it is imperative to understand the meaning of the Old Testament and the covenants that God created Noah, Abraham, Moses and David. When God created the world and humans, it was His responsibility to inhabit the world with humans. However, Adam and Eve, the first humans God created, sin against Him by eating from the tree God had forbidden. From that moment on, the world fell into sin. God is trying to renew the relationship humans were meant to have with Him. Yet while God continues to reach out to His people, they remain in their sinful ways. Therefore, God makes several covenants in an attempt to restore the relationship that was broken by His people. In this process of renewal, God wanted to include all humanity to participate in this new and final covenant. God's Covenant with Israel After Adam and Eve sinned by eating the forbidden fruit, sin was in the heart of man. Therefore, God wanted to destroy humanity but found favor with Noah. Noah listens to God as God commands him to build an ark. God shares with Noah that he was going to flood the earth. Noah tried to tell his people, but no one other than his family would listen. After God flooded the earth, he made a covenant with Noah stating that he would no longer destroy the earth. The definition of a covenant is “An agreement between two or more parties defining mutual rights and responsibilities” (Myers, 1975). Years passed and God called a man named Abraham to be the father of a nation that would later be called Israel. and Go makes a covenant with Abraham and declares that his descendants will be as numerous as the stars in the sky. There is no story of another religious leader resurrected from the death. By doing this, Jesus validates the miracles he performed and the word he shared with the world. After the resurrection, Jesus visited his disciples and that moment changed human history. The disciples were filled with God's Holy Spirit. They performed miracles and announced the good news. This movement was so powerful that even a Roman who persecuted Christians became a believer in Jesus. His belief regarding the resurrection changed his life and that of humanity. The disciples moved to different cities to share the word Jesus had given them. They were ready to die for Jesus but they knew they had a mission to accomplish..
