A Vignette from The House on Mango Street, “Those Who Don't,” by Sandra Cisneros, the poem “My Parents Kept Me From the Kids Who Were Tough” , by Stephen Spender, and another poem “We Real Cool,” by Gwendolyn Brooks, share many similarities and differences. These three literary works talk about racism and violent children. “Those Who Don’t” is about racism and how people think about others without knowing them. “My parents kept me from children who were tough” explains how a good child wants to be like other bad children. “We Real Cool” is about bad pool players. These literary works compare and contrast between figurative language, point of view, and theme. The three literary works are similar and different, especially in terms of point of view. “We Real Cool,” is the perspective of seven pool players who dropped out of school and are hiding out late. “We / left school. We/Lurk late” (3-6) shows that the pool players think they are cool because they are different from the other people at school. “My parents kept me from tough kids” is the perspective of a boy influenced by the tough kids in his neighborhood. “I feared more than the tigers…” (5) shows that the boy was afraid of children. The boy wanted to be like those children in some way but knew it wasn't a good choice. “Those Who Don’t” is told from Ezperansa’s perspective. Esperanza lives in a neighborhood with good people, bad people, and racists. “They [different races] think we're going to attack with shiny knives” (Cisneros 28) explains that people who come into a Latino race believe that Latinos would be bad. Ironically, Esperanza thinks they are stupid, but she does the same thing when she walks into a div...... middle of paper ......h boys so he can stay safe. “…Like dogs barking at my world” (10) illustrates that the child is in his own little world and bad boys bother him. In "We Real Cool", the pool players demonstrate isolation because they only talk about themselves and don't mention what people think of them. They are just in themselves. They are also all different because "Those Who Don't" is mainly about racism and the others are about violent children. These literary works are similar and different. Some pieces show the brutality of children and views on racism. When people are judged by their appearance or personality type, it is racism. Racism leads to having a bad opinion of different races, so sometimes people think about staying away from a race because it might be very bad. Each piece occupies its own place in terms of theme, point of view and figurative language..
