September 11, 2001 was and still is a national day of mourning for all races and religions who attempted the attack of the twin towers by the radicals. Muslim group, Al-Qaeda “Reaction to September 11” (1). Modern Muslims have been appalled by the reprehensible actions of Al Qaeda. But the majority of Muslims who were not affiliated with Al-Qaeda or any other radical Muslim group were verbally and mentally attacked by non-Muslims after the tragedy of 9/11 "9/11 Response" (1). The image that some non-Muslims have instilled in themselves and others is incorrect as the media only reveals the actions of radical Muslims rather than showing the peaceful Muslims of today (Shafaat, 1). There are sects or schools of radical Muslims known as Khawarjj who have added a sixth pillar to the original five pillars of Islam (Patung, 1). The five pillars of Islam that Muslims follow are belief in God, prayer, charity, fasting in Ramadan, and performing the pilgrimage (Bowker, 1). However, the Khawarjj added the sixth pillar called Jihad. Jihad is an Arabic word from the Holy Quran which means struggle. The fundamentalists changed the meaning of Jihad to make it a holy war. The prophet of Islam. Mohammed and his followers waged a holy war with the people of Mecca which was intended only to defend themselves. Groups such as Al-Qaeda, Hamas, the Muslim Brotherhood and other extremists have used the meaning of Jihad to manipulate Muslims and attack those they call "non-believers." (Muslims), even if you don't like it. But it's possible that you don't like something that's good for you and you like something that's bad for you. But God knows, and you do not know” (Al Adl, 1).
