Since birth, she had traveled to find true happiness that included love. Through her three opposing marriages, her grandmother, and a strong friendship, she was ultimately able to define love. Throughout the novel, Janie shapes her opinions about love based on her life experiences. Logan Killicks created the first revision of Janie's Love. Nanny forced Janie to marry Logan even though Janie did not wish to marry him. Janie had no prior knowledge of love and she assumed that marrying Logan would create a loving union between them. “…you told me I had to love him, and, and no. Maybe if someone told me how, Ah could do it” (Hurston 23). After some time with Logan, she realized that marriage does not inevitably create love or happiness. Janie's understanding of love remained indistinct throughout her time with Logan due to their failure to communicate. “She knew now that marriage doesn’t make love. Janie’s first dream was dead, so she became a woman” (Hurston 25). Ah, that means you have to make Sam take me fishing with him after this. No one had better not criticize you when they hear” (Hurston 192).
