In May 2015, journalist Gerhard Jörén published an article reporting many false tragedies she had endured and false stories. Mam was able to tell her story to the world by appearing on television and many different shows. After her television debut, she decided to write a book to educate society about the truth about human sex trafficking. Many victims, who Somaly Mam considered her friends, began to expose their stories and experiences to the world.
