Essay / A new generation of teenage drivers - 945
A new generation of teenage drivers hits the road every year. This new generation of teen drivers comes with a set of skills and responsibilities that they will need to acquire. Operating a motor vehicle is a task that requires an immense amount of skill, responsibility, and knowledge, and the process of obtaining a license in Indiana is expected to be more difficult. With more rigorous and longer driver training courses, more difficult driver's license exams and a stronger presence of parents in the first months of holding a driver's license, the number of related adolescent deaths to motor vehicles would not be as astronomical as today. Today, rules and regulations are not as comprehensive as they should be. At age fifteen, one can obtain a learner's permit if enrolled in a driver training program. Driving training includes thirty hours of classroom/online lessons and six hours of driving with a professional driving instructor. However, it is not necessary to have completed driver training to obtain a license. With a learner's permit, new drivers can only drive with a previously licensed driver who is at least twenty-five years old, a spouse who is licensed at twenty-one, or an instructor certified driving school. At age sixteen, a learner's permit is available to teenagers without enrolling in driver's education. To obtain the license, the teenager must pass both an eye exam and a written knowledge test. After licensing, one must complete fifty hours of driving practice only with an approved instructor, an approved driver at least twenty-five years old, or a spouse at least twenty-one years old. Ten of the fifty hours of practice must be done at night.
