Essay / Goodman Theater and Beyond - 1000
My summer marketing internship at Goodman Theater changed the course of my life. Before last summer, I only had a vague idea of my career goals. Ever since my acting debut in my middle school's production of You're a Good Man Charlie Brown, I knew I wanted to work in theater. My passion for art has always been unwavering. I appreciated the important function of theater as a mirror of society, and the dynamic relationship between the audience and the live performers was contagious and addictive. As I have grown and matured, particularly through my internship, I have been able to focus the energy and enthusiasm I have for theater into the worlds of marketing and playwriting. As I am now a graduate and need to turn these energies into a career. , I would like to begin my post-graduate experience by completing a fellowship or season-long apprenticeship at a major LORT theater. Although I have gained a wealth of knowledge about marketing at Goodman, I know there is still much I need to learn. I am looking for an apprenticeship where I can truly bridge the gap between my educational experiences and a life in professional theatre. After completing my apprenticeship, I would like to become an entry-level marketing assistant in a theater, ideally in audience development, publications or e-marketing. If possible, I would also like to work as a freelance playwright. After several years of experience, I will evaluate my position and decide whether to pursue higher education or continue working in this field. As a first step on this career path, I am applying for Marketing and Art Apprenticeships at Steppenwolf. Even if these two fields may seem quite incongruous, I believe that my experience in dramaturgy enriches my ...... middle of paper ...... full of activities of all kinds. Last summer, there was rarely a day when I didn't find something to do, people to meet, or somewhere to explore. After living in the south suburbs my entire life, I can't wait to move to a big city like Chicago. My internship at Goodman was just the beginning; I am now ready to dive headfirst into the world of professional theater. During my internship at Goodman, I discussed my future plans with several Goodman employees who had completed the Steppenwolf apprenticeship themselves. They all expressed how much they learned and grew during their time in the program, and I'm looking for exactly the kind of experience they described. I believe I will leave the Steppenwolf program as a better marketer and artist, with the skills and confidence to succeed in the professional world..
