  • Essay / Reality vs Stereotype: Prostitution - 952

In today's society, if you see a woman walking around a corner in dirty or exotic clothes, you immediately think "prostitute" and that's because she is below you. Images of a dirty and sick lifestyle flash through your head, well that's just a stereotype. The reality of prostitution is drugs, abuse and dehumanization. Whore, slut and sex worker are the popular terms to describe a woman who works as a prostitute, the stereotypes associated with these names are nothing compared to the reality of their purposes; whore is a word for prostitute, slut has nothing to do with prostitution because a slut was just a lazy woman and now the word has become promiscuous girl...not a prostitute. Sex worker is not very difficult to explain as it is a modern term used to talk about prostitutes and porn stars, porn is legal and prostitution is not. This is the best example to define the sex worker. As recently as 1991, police in a Southern California community closed all rape complaints filed by prostitutes and drug addicts, placing them in a case stamped "NHI." The letters represent the words "No Humans Involved". (Fairstein) To dehumanize prostituted women, some people create stereotypes that make people attack prostitutes, like their drug addicts who commit suicide, whores, they have no morals or values, they do it to support an addiction, they have STDs, don't respect them...... middle of paper ......b. 2011.
