  • Essay / My Air Force Mission - 844

“Dude 14, we have just located 10 anti-coalition militiamen in a bunker located 300 meters from our position! Request an immediate strike on this target! Imagine hearing those words shouted in your ear and knowing that the next moment you were about to perform a task you had trained for seven years to do. This was my situation during my first combat tour in Afghanistan. It goes without saying that using weapons against America's enemies carries great responsibility. The Air Force invested significant time and resources in training me to skillfully execute my mission aboard the F-15E Strike Eagle. My service title on paper is Weapons System Officer, but there is always a story behind every member of the Air Force that encompasses more than just a service title. The purpose of this essay is to reveal a little of my own personal history, highlighting how my background and values led me to enter the Air Force, to address what I consider to be my most important experiences in the Force air force and illustrate how my work specifically contributes to the Air Force mission. I grew up near Atlanta, Georgia, where there was no active duty air force base nearby. I also come from a family with no military background and was never encouraged to join the Air Force. I joined the group for my own internal reasons and nothing else. I played on my high school baseball team for four years, and during that time I learned to love the hard work, commitment, teamwork, and sportsmanship that it was necessary to succeed during the season. In fact, between my junior and senior year of high school, the traits I learned from playing baseball stopped becoming traits and started becoming my full-fledged personality. I wanted to find a career field...... middle of paper...... that I grant them will be what they are armed with when they go on combat sorties wherever they are. Although I am no longer deployed to Afghanistan, the knowledge I can impart will continue to thrive in the F-15E community and enable others to successfully carry out the 4th Fighter Wing's mission. Being an officer in the Air Force is something I am very proud of. In addition to being an officer, I have the honor of being the Weapons Systems Officer of the F-15E. Within the Air Force and the F-15E are values that have been dear to me from a young age, even before joining the Air Force. I was fortunate to evolve in a professional field where all my training allowed me to save American lives in Afghanistan. Once combat time was over, the new challenge was to pass this knowledge on to the next generation of aircrew for whom I am currently proud to serve..
