    Lyndon Baines Johnson, also known as LBJ, was the 36th president of the United States. LBJ was very involved in politics as a Democrat, and he is one of four people to have held all four elected federal offices in the United States (Representative, Senator, Vice President, and President). LBJ became president due to the assassination of John F. Kennedy while he was his running mate in the 1960 presidential election. He designed a bill called the "Great Society" which included executive orders that had a significant impact not only then, but also today. These rights include Medicare, environmental protection, the “war on poverty,” and more. Many people had mixed feelings about our former President Lyndon B. Johnson. He was considered by some to be a compassionate person and remembered him as a caring, generous and thoughtful man who dedicated his life to the welfare of the citizens of this country. Conversely, some considered him a dictator and failed to fulfill his duty as a political figure. During his presidency, LBJ had to make difficult decisions, as all presidents do. One of the most crucial decisions he made was to stop the bombing of North Vietnam. LBJ was motivated by our military commitment in Vietnam. He was adamant about stopping any communist expansion through his policy of containment. Another great commitment of LJB to this country was to the improvement of civil rights. Days after the assassination of President John F. Kennedy, civil rights activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. made a suggestion to LBJ. King indicated that he might honor the death of President Kennedy by adopting some of the policies he had worked on – particularly civil rights.
