Once a pond at a time, a long, long time ago, where there were several film production studios – RKO, Warner Brothers, Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, United Artist, Universal Studios, Paramount Pictures, Walt Disney Pictures and Columbia Pictures which controlled 90% of the American film industry since the invention of cinema. These production houses produced mass-produced films to satisfy young America's thirst for entertainment. Most of the film had a very similar plot, themes, and actors. Each studio would bring its own touch to the story to make it their own. Sometimes a rival studio would release the same types of films on the same day to entice customers to watch another film from the studio. I think it was only with the invention of the production designer position that studios began to forge their identity. In the late 1800s, theater was how most people viewed entertainment. Smaller theaters were scattered throughout America's small towns, with major theaters in densely populated towns. The grand theater was heavily decorated and going there was a treat, the performances were spectacles of wonder for the times. The colorful costumes, live music and realistic sets are a sight to behold. People lined up for hours just to be able to see some of the most popular plays of the time. In the late 1800s photography was born and soon after the first image was produced. The first film where simple still images, when flipped in sequential order, the still images appeared to move. Moviegoers were initially wary of this new technology, but over time they embraced it and wanted more. As with any new technology, cinema began to evolve. Synchronized sound was now being introduced to silent films. In today's film industry, the art department is primarily computerized. There are countless graphic designers, motion capture designers, and visual designers who can produce a world on a computer screen in half the time it would take Menzies to do his sketches. The independent film company has the choice to choose its production. Designer - PD, where in the old studio system the system told the director who he should work with and stick to the studio's vision of the film. PDs now have the power to express the visions they want, not force them into production. With the PD's freedom to express their vision, the value of film production has reached new heights. If a decorator can dream it, their team can bring it to life.
