  • Essay / Why should people raise chickens? - 2117

One of the reasons most have them is for the eggs, chickens produce about 1 egg per day depending on the breed. When you raise your own chickens, you control what they eat and they give you wonderful eggs in return. Most people think that it is the same as an egg that we buy from the market, but it is not. If you've ever had a farm-fresh egg, you won't want to buy store-bought eggs again. The eggs you buy at the market come from farms, but from mass-producing farmers. These poor chickens are raised solely to provide eggs; they are usually in a box/cage or room with many, many other chickens. Only feed a mix which is generally the cheapest, no insects, no grass. I mean eggs are “normal”. They are shipped to a warehouse where they wait to be shipped to markets around the world. They have an expiration date because the FDA requires it. Fresh eggs can sit on the counter without refrigeration for weeks, provided they are not fertilized. A chicken that has access to an enclosure with insects, worms, grass, treats, gets a little extra, so it produces a dark yellow/orange egg. It's so much tastier than a store-bought egg. Chickens can also be considered a pet, I imagine myself with a cup of tea sitting outside near my garden with the chickens roaming free. As I would with my dogs or my cats, they will approach you; kids can even collect them
