Essay / Roe V Wade: Bias on Abortion/Planned Parenthood
Abortion is “the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy.” Abortion began to attract controversy when the United States began implementing abortion laws in the 1820s, most notably after Roe V. Wade. Abortion laws first stated that women could not have an abortion after four months of pregnancy and changed. The Roe V. Wade case took place in 1973, where the United States Supreme Court considered "the question of the constitutionality of the law which criminalized or restricted access to abortion." The court ruled in favor of the Fourteenth Amendment and said women have the right to have an abortion, but some states may say otherwise. States essentially want to protect human life and women's health. Initially, the case was settled by requiring states to regulate abortion until the third trimester of pregnancy. Later, in another case, the court system rejected the quarterly framework. At one time, abortion was considered illegal. Abortion is one of the most discussed topics in the United States and generates a lot of prejudice. Say no to plagiarism. Fox News and the New York Times are two tabloids that provide information to the public but are also associated with bias. The United States must implement a way to eliminate bias in the media because it affects people negatively and only broadcasts subjective stories, leaving out valuable information. In a survey by the Pew Research Center, they claim that "Fox News was the primary source for 40% of [Republican] voters in the 2016 election" and that "when it comes to choosing a media source...the conservatives are leaning heavily toward Fox News.” This means that conservative, right-wing individuals tend to favor this source to discuss political or global topics. Meanwhile, the New York Times is considered more liberal. The Pew Research Center also investigated this source and found that "the New York Times audience is consistently liberal and that since the 1960s, the New York Times has only supported Democratic presidential candidates." . It can be seen that both Fox News and the New York Times have some sort of bias when reporting information to the public. Currently, social media and news networks have had a huge impact/influence on individuals. Media outlets such as CNN, The New York Times, Fox New, and The Washington Post provide political and economic news to the public. Some media outlets provide information based on whether they are Democratic or Republican, and the way they present information can have an influential impact. Bias by omission occurs when the media strongly supports one political side over the other and fails to provide information, leaving out the views of the other party. For example, the New York Times writes articles based on its liberal fan base. In Will the Supreme Court Overturn Roe V. Wade After All?, the article discusses the possibility of Roe V. Wade being overturned. The article discusses only the situation regarding Justice Anthony M. Kennedy and his retirement, overturningpossibly the Roe V. Wade case. The article never specifies what would happen if the case was dismissed. It does not discuss how “Louisiana, Mississippi, North and South Dakota” would ban abortion if the case were thrown out. The New York Times did this so that individuals who lived in states where people would like to ban abortion could not be informed of how close they were to passing this law. They also did not discuss the possibility that Trump was violating women's rights by imposing this waiver. Similarly, Fox News published Abortion, Roe v. Wade at center for Supreme Court nominee debate: What could happen to this historic law? This article places a heavy emphasis on Justice Brett Kavanaugh rather than the subject itself. Fox News fails to explain why this cancellation could benefit the conservative party or how it could harm the liberal party. The majority of abortion information found in the media is one-sided, meaning that the tabloid or publisher has a certain opinion on the subject that is quietly implemented in their information. When reading about Roe V. Wade, most of the news leaves aside the conservative or liberal side to get their message across. They want to give the impression that their answer is the only right one, and somewhat ignore the other political point of view. Another way tabloids create bias is through labeling. When reading an article or watching a video, Americans can become very obsessed with labels and people's perceptions can change. In the New York Times article, Louise Melling states: "Most recently, Chief Justice Roberts chastised President Trump for attacking a judge as 'Judge Obama,' saying there was no no Obama judges or Trump judges, only judges.” President Trump actually responded to Chief Roberts by saying, "Sorry...but you do have Obama judges." By calling the judges "Obama judges", Donald Trump is stating that since Obama appointed the judges, they will influence what he believes/wants. This is very problematic because it indicates that the "Obama judges" will only vote on democratic opinions and ignore conservative opinions, and vice versa. This worries people because someone in power is claiming that there is bias among the judges and that these judges should be impartial. Similarly, Fox News claims that those who are pro-choice are “acting like your own god” and calls them “murder.” Saying that women cannot “act as their own god” can have negative effects. This phrase can make a person feel like they are in a position of power because it is essentially comparing them to God. If individuals choose to have an abortion, it is up to them to feel bad about themselves because they hold the power of the fetus's life in their hands. Not to mention that the word murder has a negative connotation associated with it. This not only implies that the women killed a person, but that she killed the person herself. In this case, this is not true and the word association deters individuals from siding with the pro-choice side due to the word negative association. Negative word association occurs in both groups, so it is not considered. Besides omission and labeling, there is also bias due to story selection. This includes when reporters/journalists use individuals to support their cause. Moreover, when it “includes more sources that support one point of view over another.” This sounds a lot like bias by omission, as it only attempts to justify theirpolitical opinions. In the Fox News article, some subsections include public opinions. Fox interviewed Aziza Ahmed, a law professor at Northwestern University School who specializes in abortion and health law. Professor Ahmed claims that if Roe V. Wade were overturned, there would be "more laws restricting abortion [and they] would be passed and considered constitutional" and he also indicated that abortion would become illegal if the deal was canceled. Fox News only includes news that will enhance the conservative side rather than also including liberal views, which makes Fox News appear more credible. On the contrary, the New York Times article serves as a platform to observe “judge bias.” President Trump only nominated Brett Kavanaugh so he could help overturn the vote on this matter. They claim that "President Trump has promised to nominate justices who would overturn Roe V. Wade," meaning the president will do anything to overturn the cases. This helps their case because judges appointed by Trump will automatically vote his way. The New York Times also wrote, "The question is no longer what the Supreme Court's soothsayers will tell us, but whether Chief Justice Roberts and his conservative colleagues will preserve the integrity of the Court or use their new majority to keep Trump’s promise.” This statement basically says the judge will either vote impartially or give Trump what he wanted. The New York Times is only using this information to improve its argument about the judges' bias, not the case itself. When it comes to credible facts/sources, it is very difficult to find them. Many sites have bias implemented and individuals don't even notice it. Fact checking is very important because it allows readers to see whether the information they are getting is true or false. People need to educate themselves with appropriate unbiased information so that they can have an unbiased perspective on topics. Sources Will the Supreme Court Overturn Roe V. Wade After All? and abortion, Roe v. Wade at center of Supreme Court nominee debate: What could happen to landmark law? both had slightly truthful information. For example, it is true that Trump wanted to appoint a judge who would vote the way Trump wants the law to pass. Also, another truth is that people use very harsh negative language with word associations regarding pro-choice people. Not to mention lies were seen in the articles. When the media claims that judges vote based on who elected them, that is a lie because most judges remain neutral and tend to vote on how they think it will help society/the people. They vote based on what people want and need.Keep in mind: This is just a sample.Get a personalized article now from our expert writers.Get a custom essayAbortion is a topic controversial which makes it difficult to obtain unbiased information. Media outlets like Infowars, Fox News, and The Blaze tend to have more conservative views, while Palmer Report, The Huffington Post, and The New York Times have more liberal views. If an individual wishes to educate themselves on a certain political topic, they should use unbiased sources like ABC News or TIME, because these sources do not have "a preferred [political party], nor an opinion that could influence the judgment [ individuals]”.
