  • Essay / Narrative Sketch of a Rocking Chair - 1239

Not selectedAntique Rocking Chair (10) The rocking chair belonged to your paternal grandmother's maternal grandfather, Anton Peterson. The chair was used during my childhood in the home of my grandparents, Bill and Clara Swanson, after which it passed to my parents and then to me. My best guess at the origins of the rocking chair is that Anton purchased the chair either around the time he was living with his daughter, Clara, and son-in-law, Willie (Bill), on a farm in Peaceful Valley, from De 1914 to 1921, or shortly thereafter, they acquired and moved into the large Harris house immediately following their residence on the farm. The years on the farm were profitable due to high prices as the war persisted in Europe, and I estimate it was purchased for her by her parents around 1940. To date it has been used by four generations of our family. We used it when we slid up the hill on the north side of the Harris Barn with Mike, Carleen, Brent and Kirsten Ronchetti. I used it on the same hill as a child, as did my mother as a child. Jasmine and Savannah went down the hill at North Branch's Riverside Park on a toboggan. Hopefully, future generations will continue to use and enjoy the slide. Please treat it with respect and only use it under adult supervision. William Tell Mechanical Bank (9) This bank was owned by your paternal grandmother's parents, William and Clara Swanson. Based on my internet research, it might have some monetary value. However, the prices I see vary widely. William Tell deposits the coins in the bank by shooting an apple at his son's head. My mom, me, you two girls, and Jasmine and Savannah played with this bank. Alfred Meakin Dinnerware (8)This fine dinnerware belonged to your maternal grandmother's maternal grandmother, Dorothea Henningson. It features a delicate green pattern and includes unique pieces, such as the sauce pitcher and bone.
