Essay / A Lecture on College Lecture Hall - 1105
College Lecture HallIntroductionI didn't always take my classes online, I used to go to class every day and listen the lectures given by my professors in person. I have had many great experiences learning in the classroom, but I have also had some less than great experiences. The experiences that were not very good were the courses where the professor taught only through lectures and tests. The two experiments I'm going to use as examples are very different from each other, one being a great example of learning where the framework used an approach environment and the other being a poor example using an approach environment avoidance. The approach environment is “a setting in which the client feels comfortable and wants to spend time”. (Fisk, 2014) I took a classroom management course last year and had a great experience. Many elements contributed to making this classroom experience an approachable experience. First, there were no individual desks but groups of tables and chairs. Before the course started, I could tell that this course would encourage group interactions and discussions. Then I noticed that there were posters on the wall with interesting quotes, ideas and mottos from different companies. This encouraged me because I thought it would be a creative learning environment. Finally, the professor led the class in group discussions more than in lectures. Example of an avoidance environment The text describes an avoidance environment as “one that the client finds undesirable and unattractive.” (Fisk, 2014) The class I took that is a great example of this is the college algebra class I took last spring. Many elements of avoidance interfered... middle of article...... students face attrition, these positive impressions can help reduce dropout rates. (Rethinking the Classroom: Spaces Designed for Active Learning and Engaged Learning and Teaching, 2015) The room I was in was large and cold. A college could transform this element by only holding large classes in large rooms and teaching smaller classes in smaller rooms or library rooms. ConclusionThe college experience gave me excellent examples of approach elements and environments as well as avoidance elements and environments. Turning negatives into neutrals or positives seems simple but would come at a cost. Marketing these changes to prospective students and their parents would also present challenges, as not everyone understands forward thinking. I will say this, my grade was better in the class that had an environment and approach elements.
