  • Essay / Gender discrimination and bullying - 626

Sexual discrimination is found to be one of the many forms of bullying. Many children struggle every day because they are bullied because of their sexuality. Some people don't understand what bullying can do to a child or teen's self-esteem. Teens who are bullied can develop anxiety, depression, and many commit suicide. “Research by Mark Hatzenbuehler showed that of the 30,000 year 11 students he asked to complete a survey, 20% of LGB (lesbian, gay and bisexual) people had attempted suicide in the previous 12 months. survey, while only 4% of heterosexual adolescents attempted suicide. had." (Welsh) According to these statistics, more LGB teenagers commit suicide than heterosexual children. Some children are able to overcome their depression or anxiety through support from loved ones or even therapy. Due to bullying because of their sexuality, these phenomena can lead to depression, anxiety and suicide In most cases, children become depressed because they are bullied because of their sexuality. Sometimes adults or even classmates are oblivious to their children's or friends' depression. Children try to hide the fact that they are depressed because they don't want to be made fun of even more. They seek attention. By keeping all their depression under control, most children commit suicide or cut themselves off from the world. For example, one day my friend Matthew came to my house after school. 'he's been bullied for a while now and when I see this happening I speak up for him but that day I was absent from school so when he came he started saying random very depressing things. Finally, he started to cry. He talked about how much it hurt him when he was bullied and how much he wanted...... middle of paper ... mild declination if their sexuality doesn't match yours, not an attempt to ruin your life. .” (Matthew, Terry) Unfortunately, this is how our society acts. People can't love who they want or be accepted because of this. The bullies try to ruin the children's lives by making them feel better, but they end up committing suicide. Bullies may not realize that what they say can affect what the victim thinks. Bullies may think that bullying someone is just a good joke, but in reality, children die because of it. Depression, anxiety, and suicide are all effects that can occur when children are bullied because of their sexuality. Works Cited Terry, Matthew. "Questions". Personal interview. October 25, 2013.
