Essay / Cinema has long been very popular in society and can also compete with other films of different and popular genres. The sports genre, like other genres, has been around as long as movies and short films. Some of the earliest sports films include a film produced in the early 1890s called Corbett and Courtney Before the Kinetograph. (KL Dickson & Heise, 1894) This is arguably one of the first silent films people saw, let alone the sports genre. The sports genre itself can be debatable as it is reserved for sports or athletics fanatics. However, we find that many sports films can bring such symbolic and unique meaning to audiences that we can set aside the genre name and appreciate the film for what it means. There are certain expectations that films in the sports genre must come together for the film to be successful and popular. The plot is one of the important elements of the sports film genre. Sports films should be about sports, or contests or competitions among themselves or within a group of people testing them. (Baker, 2003) Many expectations of the sports film genre have to do with the character ultimately defining themselves after hard work and determination which emerges as a theme for many sports films. Many sports films tend to have to deal with the main character(s) who are usually underdogs throughout the film until they put in that effort and determination until they achieve victory at the end of the film where they win. A general expectation of sports movie audiences is that the good guy... middle of paper... himself is just waiting to be won. Rocky also showed that even if you lose, the effort and hard work you put in makes you a winner. The sports genre reveals several things about the film audience and the culture that produced it. The genre shows that the filmmaker tried to reveal a much deeper symbolic idea in an event that can be related to anyone. These films did not need to be watched by a sports fanatic and still enjoyed, because they all took on other roles and showed it through sporting events. What the genre says about audiences is that audiences like to see movies with a character who seems to be struggling because we're all like Rocky, or Coach Carters basketball team, or hockey from Coach Herb Brooks. We all have heart and determination that can move us forward in life, it's just whether or not we want to put in the work and effort...
