  • Essay / Benefits and Consequences of Nonsexual Victimization

Oudekerk, Farr, and Reppucci (2013) found that society showed more disapproval of a relationship between an older person and a very young adolescent. On the contrary, few problems were expressed with regard to two people whose ages were very different, but who were nevertheless above the minimum age of consent. However, in a similar study, Oudekerk, Farr, and Reppucci (2013) found that participants felt that people significantly older (i.e., 27 years old) deserved more severe punishment than people younger than 10 years older than their companion. In line with the government's goal of "protecting" women from unwanted sexual acts, female respondents felt that young girls were at greater risk than their male counterparts. How could this be true if women mature mentally faster than men (Oliveri, 2000; Koon-Magnin, 2014)? Do young women really face such a high risk of being emotionally, mentally and physically scarred by statutory rape and other sexual acts? ?
