Introduction: Motivation according to Kelley (2014) is the “process by which managers develop the desire to be productive and effective in their employees”. If an employee is motivated, they are more likely to be productive and employee turnover is generally low. The problem with worker motivation is that workers are not seen as humans, they lack freedom in the workplace and do not thrive in their work. Taylor and McGregor Theory While Maslow and McGregor's Theory Y argues that there is a problem with worker motivation due to the class conflict between the worker and the manager. The worker seeks more than simple economic advantages, he aspires to personal fulfillment and freedom. A Marxist view is that managers exploit workers and that there is class conflict. This essay will describe and identify if there is a problem with worker motivation, and present a brief description of motivation and capitalism. If problems are identified regarding worker motivation, possible solutions will be proposed. The essay will detail Maslow and McGregor's Theories X and Y and will make reference to Taylorism. Finally, a conclusion will be drawn on the most appropriate and justifiable argument. Motivation: According to Casey et al. (2012) motivation stimulates people to do things through “incentives”.
