Essay / Analysis of Shame by Dick Gregory - 2206
A fellow was based on the research of Richard Hoggart. For many years, Rodriguez called himself a scholar. Rodriguez did not realize how much his pretense of being a scholar was affecting him until he was well beyond a mature adult. The scholar label that Richard Rodriguez knew he was had a negative impact on how students perceived him. The students called him "Kiss Ass", he always wanted the teacher's attention. The scholarship label made Rodriguez question whether he was a good or bad student. Rodriguez lost connection to his family and his Hispanic heritage because he wanted to please his teachers. As a fellow, Rodriguez influenced his professional life, he taught in the same way his teacher taught him an education filled with banking concepts. Richard states in his presentation: “He is taking his first step towards academic success, far from his family” (Rodriguez, 518). Rodriguez had focused entirely on his studies. As Rodriguez gets closer and closer to his studies, his association with his family has become ugly. Rodriguez lost touch with his Hispanic culture, his teacher was proud to say so and was also proud to lose his cultural sense of being since he was so focused on his schoolwork. He also did not have a considerable social life due to his constant focus on reading and reading.
