Essay / My personal experience: My experience with people with disabilities
What comes to mind is my annual sleepover. I have a total of five nieces and nephews as well as my two children. I used to take all of them except Ethan for a week in the summer. I didn't include him because I was afraid of how he would act. I didn't know how to handle it when it flared up. Looking back, I wish I had included it more. However, I didn't have the experience I have today with children. Now I understand his disability better, which I think would have changed the way I looked at him. His disability prevented him from many fun activities, not only with me but also with other people. I think the stereotype I reinforced was that he wasn't normal because he had a disability. I understand now that his outbursts were his way of trying to communicate with people. This must have been so frustrating for him. What I know about him is that he's a genius when it comes to video games. When I see him during the holidays or his birthday, he often gives me a list of games he would like me to buy for his X-box or Play Station. I'm surprised he plays it because I don't have the kind of stamina needed to concentrate on a video game for an extended period of time. However, he plays them until he finishes the entire thing
