Augusto Cesar Sandino: legendary Nicaraguan revolutionary. Cesar Augusto Sandino's story began in Niquinohomo, Nicaragua on May 18, 1895. He was born the unrecognized child of Margarita Calderon and small landowner Gregorio Sandino. . Little is known about his childhood, except that he was raised by his mother and that he worked with her in the fields from a very young age. Throughout his youth and adolescence, he worked in several other Central American countries. He later went to work in the oil industry in Mexico. It was in Mexico that he tasted the social equality promoted by Mexican unions. When Augusto returned to his home country to work in a mine owned by an American citizen, he tried to share his new patriotic ideals with his co-workers. When Nicaragua's constitutional war broke out, he went to the Honduras border and spent his savings on weapons. Together, he and his colleagues detonated the mine. The following night, U.S. Marines invaded the town of Puerto Cabezas, confiscated the rebels' weapons, and declared the town a neutral zone. After being reluctantly accepted by General Moncada, they then headed north to the most mountainous part of Nicaragua. Very concerned about this situation, Sandino went to meet the new president of Nicaragua, Sacasa. He and the president discussed this issue and Sandino agreed to a ceasefire. While on his way to a gala to which the president had invited him, his car was intercepted and he and his men were shot and killed by National Guard soldiers.
