  • Essay / The Health Effectiveness Data and Information Set (...

IntroductionThe Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) measures are indicators used by more than 90% of national health plans to assess the quality of care on important health issues (National Committee for Quality Assurance [NCQA], 2016)). This article will focus on the HEDIS measure of physical activity in older adults. This article will affirm the importance of physical activity in the national health care landscape and examine the guidelines and research that influence this measure. Finally, the importance and effectiveness of this measure in primary care will be discussed. Background With the development of HEDIS measures, the emphasis on physical activity among older adults has taken on greater importance. Physical inactivity contributes to approximately 27% of national health care costs, and older adults are more likely to develop chronic disease that is preventable through physical activity (Neidrick, Fick, & Loeb, 2012). Currently, less than 20% of older adults meet activity recommendations established by the CDC, and more than half are considered to lead a sedentary lifestyle (National Quality Measures Clearinghouse [NQMC], 2015; Neidrick, Fick, & Loeb, 2012 ). Specifically, physical inactivity increases the risk of obesity, cardiovascular disease, hypertension, stroke, type 2 diabetes, and cancer (Centers for Disease Control [CDC], 2015). Additionally, less active older adults are at increased risk of musculoskeletal disorders like arthritis and osteoporosis, and muscle weakness and imbalance can contribute to falls and injuries (CDC, 2015). Although the measure can determine the percentage of patients who have had discussions with a provider about physical activity, the correlation between counseling and increased long-term physical activity among older adults has not been demonstrated by research (NQMC, 2015; Neidrick, Fick and Loeb, 2012). . Future research should focus on the effectiveness of the HEDIS measure in producing positive outcomes, as well as specific interventions that increase the effectiveness of long-term increased physical activity in older adults. The benefits of physical activity—reducing costs, improving chronic health conditions, preventing disease, and improving quality of life—for older patients are substantial, and providers must continue to find ways to include this important preventive health measure in discussion whenever possible..
