In the story “The Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” written by Lisa See, we are presented with characters in the story who change their attitude towards certain situations in their life. These are "triggers" in each character that make them grow as a person, whether for better or worse. In those days, women had to follow the rules. In the book, we are presented with characters who break the mold of how women are viewed in that era. These women change and manage conflicts within themselves. The first character we have is Snow Flower, then Lily's and finally Madame Wang. First, we have Lily who we see growing up before our eyes. We see her relationship with Snow Flower blossom from when they were little girls into adulthood. I believe Lily had many triggers in her life, but I believe the main one was when she confronted her mother for not telling her about Snow Flowers' family and past. When it came to Snow Flower, Lily considered her a superior being. She had put Snowflower on a pedestal even as a young girl and simply couldn't understand that Snowflower was just another human being like her. When Lily discovers that her parents lied to her for ten years, she feels betrayed and doesn't understand why. She never thought that the person she thought so highly of lived in such a dump. Lily's stage of life confronting her mother shocked me, but it was something Lily felt like she had to do. “My body shook from the emotions raging beneath my skin. Mom felt them and smiled in her knowing way. I dug my nails into her flesh like she had done to me. I kept my voice low so no one in the house could hear what I was saying. “You are a liar. You, along with everyone in this family, deceived me. Did you think I wouldn't discover Snow Flower? (See 87). ...... middle of paper ...... about friendship and what it means to be a woman. In a woman's life there are ups and downs that change us as a person. We also begin to look out for the best interests of others and not just ourselves. In conclusion, “Snow Flower and the Secret Fan” shows the real struggle of children growing up to become women in this era. This also shows a beautiful relationship between Snow Flower and Lily. We see each character grow based on the situations presented to them in their lives. Lily didn't want to sit back and let her mother rule her anymore, so I think the fact that she stood up to her mother was remarkable of her. Additionally, Snow Flower struggles against all odds despite her past. Finally, we have Madam Wang who looks out for the best interests of her nieces and shows great strength and heart. These characters have all faced conflict in their lives and each character has changed because of it..
