  • Essay / School Violence - 852

There are many problems in our American society that need an influential leader to step in and take the lead, but one problem that I believe deserves more attention is violence at school. Today we always hear about schools being locked down or closed due to a threat, children being bullied, or a school shooting. School is supposed to be a place where children can go to get away from the problems at home. Children should also feel safe at school and not have to worry if someone brings a gun into a school building. Violence in schools, such as shootings, has increased over the years, since Columbine, Virginia Tech and most recently Sandy Hook. During these three events, many students lost their lives simply because they were participating in their daily routine of attending school and wanting to learn. When a shooting or violence occurs in a school, the media is the first source of information. People become concerned and more aware of a problem once it has already occurred, which is a major problem. Elected officials are not sufficiently addressing this problem because violence and shootings are becoming more and more frequent. Authorities only addressed the issue of school violence once a major high-profile event occurred. For example, when a major event like Sandy Hook occurred, people tried to find a better solution to protect schools from another devastating event. I think school violence is overlooked by many people. People realize the event after it has happened and never follow a specific plan to resolve the problem. An elected official must take a stand and become a leader on this issue. In order to solve the problem of school violence, a leader must step up his efforts, this is...... middle of paper ...... his penguins took care of minor issues while remaining focused on the common goal. A leader can organize himself by writing down each step individually, which will lead the team toward the goal and achieve success. School violence is a major problem in American society today. No one has taken the initiative to step up and help find a solution to end this problem. The media covers violence once it happens, but is quickly forgotten. The eight-step change method would help leaders stay organized with their plan and hopefully succeed like the penguin colony in the book. Metal detectors and more security in schools will help reduce violence and students will feel safer while participating in their daily routines. Works CitedNorthouse, Peter G. (2012).
