Essay / Armed teachers and staff in schools - 1406
Schools were once traditionally considered a safe place for children, adolescents and adults. The educational framework coupled with community involvement provided no reason for violence to occur in schools. Over the years, the outbreak of school violence has shocked communities across the country, calling on state legislators and school districts to find a solution to prevent these acts from happening. Events such as the Columbine High School shooting in Colorado in 1999 urged schools across the United States to strengthen their security measures with stricter policies and procedures, while spending millions of dollars on security equipment, from security cameras to metal detectors. Although schools are increasing their security measures to prevent another major incident from occurring, such as a suspect armed with a gun (active shooter) entering school grounds, some of the Security measures were not effective. An example is the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, where the shooter was able to bypass a locked door, which is one of the security measures put in place by the school, forcing the personnel visiting the school to request entry into the building (Barron). Although most security measures passively make schools safer, it is not enough to prevent an individual who intends to create mass violence from carrying out their task. State officials, national organizations, school staff and parents must come together to find the most reliable ways to prevent an active shooter situation from occurring in their schools. One solution that has been active is that many schools have partnered with local law enforcement to provide police officers to patrol school grounds........ middle of paper ..... .
