Essay / Cyberbullying: Nowhere to Escape - 1275
Across the world, the Internet is used daily by children. People in the UK can have a full conversation with someone from Utah with just one click. A housewife can go online and look for an answer to almost all her problems, but she doesn't think about the dangers. Innocent people have been kidnapped and even killed following searches on social media. Wherever a person poses a threat, they can threaten them. Kids today spend most of their time on social media, posting their life stories on networks like Instagram and Twitter. They do not see the pain to which they may be exposed; they think no one can hurt them online. Cyberbullying, one of the newest forms of technology-induced bullying, has had serious consequences for unsuspecting victims. Harassment has taken a modern turn with a new crime scene, cyberbullying. Cyberbullying has become increasingly popular as our Internet network choices increase. Verbal intimidation begins to sift through all recent Internet sources, making it easier to spread information (McKellor-Kirchoff, 1). This new form is growing so quickly that those who try to stop it cannot keep up (Campfield, 26). The abuse occurs through text messages, Facebook posts, etc. ; which causes no one to see it in person, making it harder to stop it ("Cyberbullying Crackdown", 1). Because the Internet is such an important part of our daily lives, as homework, entertainment, or a "social lifeline," victims may find it difficult to escape this type of abuse (Campfield, 28). When adults were younger they were able to move and the bullying stopped, but today's children can't escape it, causing victims to be broken by the constant...... middle of the paper......higher percentage of depression and suicidal thoughts opposed to those who are not victims. Cyberbullying has become a more serious problem as our use of the Internet increases. Today, people can go online and post whatever “feels right” without anyone questioning it, with people just believing it to be true. Victims of cyberbullying may be targeted by someone they know and will likely never meet or experience such a set of emotional and psychological problems. The targeted person may be affected for the rest of their life since it extends beyond the school or office. Cyberbullying breaks down the security walls that people build around their homes with just the press of a few buttons. It can destroy their lives with every flicker of a little light.
