Essay / Misrepresentation of women in Dworkin's Once Upon A Time
Dworkin concluded that in fairy tales, women rely on men and cannot accomplish anything without them. People found her writings too biased, aiming to make women seen as property to the extent that this does not apply to modern times. However, in reality, Dworkin's statement is true because not all women are independent. Some still depend on men in all respects. For example, “fairy tales are the main information about culture. They delimit roles, interactions and values…” (page 34). This quote shows that fairy tales have a huge impact on identifying gender roles for women in today's society. These gender roles can mean a lot to children and make them assume that women are necessary for household chores and leisure activities. Today a woman also cares about her beauty and having a man in her life. Society conforms to these roles in order to have a "happily ever after" similar to every fairy.
