Some leaders have natural abilities, but even they must cultivate and develop their skills to succeed. Individuals who do not have natural instincts for leadership communication can develop them if they have the energy and desire to do so. Developing these skills involves learning about yourself and your abilities. During this process, a lot of information emerges that requires a lot of introspection. During this self-assessment, areas such as image, managing the feelings of others, and various communication dynamics should be examined. This process can be time consuming and effective, it is worth the time and effort required to be successful. The process will reveal areas that need improvement and areas in which a person can excel. Once these areas are noted, an improvement plan with goals can be created to work toward becoming a successful and effective leader. It is a gradual process which, if done seriously and effectively, could yield exceptional results for the leader and his group. AbilitiesThere are many areas of abilities and each is geared towards the skills needed to succeed in communication. It is believed that the best way “to assess the effectiveness of a leader is to assess the perceptions of his or her followers” (Oyinlade, 2006). The categories included in this list are examples of the type of skills required of a good leader. Assessing these abilities helps you understand yourself and others. This list indicates the starting and current levels of this particular self-
