Essay / The pros and cons of cyberbullying - 1281
Ninety-three percent of children aged twelve to seventeen living in the United States of America use the Internet. Of these ninety-three percent, thirty-eight percent are in high school and are hiding their online activities from their parents (Roleff, 2012). Most children choose to use social networks such as Facebook, Instagram and Twitter. These popular sites allow users to share photos and videos, as well as public and private messages. While social media on the Internet is a great way to communicate with friends and loved ones, it can also give rise to negative comments and even cyberbullying. Cyberbullying can be defined as the use of technology such as cell phones, email, text messaging, instant messaging, or social networking sites. Cyberbullying is most often committed by children, but more particularly by adolescents (Roleff, 2012). A specific case of cyberbullying in 2003 led to the suicide of Ryan Patrick Halligan. Ryan was a student at Albert D. Lawton Middle School in Essex Junction, Vermont. Ryan's classmates and peers began teasing and picking on him. Even some of Ryan's friends started to bully him. He couldn't escape the emotional abuse, as the harassment also started happening online. Ryan was often logged into AOL Instant Messenger, better known as AIM. At this point, Ryan couldn't escape criticism from his peers because even when he was alone in his room, with a single click, negative comments and threats flooded his computer screen. Although his parents knew Ryan was being bullied at school, they didn't know he was being cyberbullied. This is an example of something that can happen to a child without a parent even knowing their child is being cyberbullied. ...... middle of paper ......lp or talk about how they feel and how they are treated. Children who are victims of cyberbullying don't know what to do with themselves, some children think that if they just get hurt it's no big deal. But in these cases, this is not the case, so if a friend or relative is around to comfort and provide support, the child will realize that he is not alone. If someone is a victim of cyberbullying, they can seek intervention. These interventions indicate who is cyberbullying and how to stop it. A child should participate in these interventions to help them release all their feelings and anger. A child should not feel alone or in danger. Children should also come forward to their parents if they are victims of cyberbullying because if they don't it can lead to suicide..
