  • Essay / The benefit of thinking maps and document cameras for...

Student Population: Our elementary school serves a diverse group of 587 students in the Denver metro area. 11% of our student population is learning English. We now have a document camera for each grade level, but we have found that with such an effective tool (especially with our English learners) it is difficult to accommodate all students. With the rapid growth of our ELA and 21st century learner population, it becomes increasingly necessary that we expand the use of this tool to help our students connect key vocabulary concepts to visual representation. Our school expects larger classes in 2010-2011. Greater access to this technology is essential to ensure that all students experience the spontaneous modeling and learning moments that occur when the document camera is more easily accessible to all. Integration for Student Success: The document camera allows large group teaching to benefit from the advantages usually associated with it. with smaller groups. For example, the ability to ask students to show what they have written or demonstrate their thinking on a math problem frees the teacher from the front of the class. Single-use course photocopies may be deleted. Students will be able to “show and tell” throughout the day, creating a more engaged classroom. We are currently integrating Thinking Maps into our environment to allow students to organize their concepts and ideas. We encourage students to draw their own maps, rather than providing photocopies to each child. The documentary camera will make it possible to model this behavior in the students' spiral notebooks. Teachers will keep their own journals and use them to model their own thinking. Through the scaffolding, the student...... middle of paper ......e used as a reference for students and teachers. This software will also allow deeper integration with existing whiteboards to scan and create documents. Once grant funds are spent, it will be determined if our school will continue to invest in document cameras using a decentralized budget and/or PTCO funds. The initial deployment and data collected through the grant opportunity will become an important part of budget decisions moving forward. A positive conclusion to our hypothesis will persuade other teachers and policy makers that the document camera is a valuable addition to our educational toolbox, helping us achieve building-wide academic goals. Our next step would be to purchase another set of grade level document cameras that would be attached to another group of teachers. Detailed Budget: Detailed Budget Worksheet attached here..
