In the years following her arrest in Virginia, Murray faced additional oppression. In the face of adversity, Murray continually protested by participating in demonstrations at restaurants in downtown Washington while studying at Howard University Law School. At first, Murray was just a participant, but she insisted on doing more for the movement by serving as a student advisor. This is how Pauli Murray went from being a member to becoming a precursor of protests against discrimination. During the process of integrating downtown Washington restaurants, Murray experienced success and failure simultaneously. Although Murray's line-up of protesters were eventually served at the restaurant, they were instructed to refrain from protesting afterward. This message did not resonate with Murray who was determined to continue his non-violent methods with the sit-in.
