  • Essay / Essay on Gender Roles in Sons and Lovers By DH Lawrence

Introduction DH Lawrence surely had his way of writing. He was different from many other authors. Lawrence wasn't that different by a long shot, as he was able to write to relate to almost anyone. If you have read any of his books, you must know by now that he is a one-of-a-kind author when it comes to writing and gender roles. Society has had a huge impact on gender roles for both men and women over time. Simply, any woman could argue that Lawrence makes a good statement about women in his books and relates to the feminine gender in many different ways, perhaps more than any other male author. For example, consider the book Sons and Lovers (1913) written by DH Lawrence. Although the title itself has nothing that makes a gender role a role assumed by a person by a person of a specific gender and what is expected of them in society. During the 1900s and the Victorian era, gender roles were pretty stereotypical to say the least. From men who do all the outside work and earn money, to women who stay at home and take care of the family and household all day. At the time of the Great Depression, some men were laid off, forcing some of them to assume the gender role as a woman and take on the duties and functions of a housekeeper. This was a challenge for most men, people who perhaps felt less of a man by not being the main breadwinner of the family. The Second World War also marked a turning point in the distribution of roles between the sexes. Due to the shortage of men in the labor market, because they had gone to fight in the war, more and more women were recruited into the labor market. It was a time for women to take a step into the male-dominated world of work and experience more than just working at home. After the men returned, some women returned to their original roles of housework, while others remained in the workforce. Although men found it difficult to accept that women worked and helped support their families, women appreciated the fact that they took on and changed their gender roles. Lawrence helps us understand conflict from a man's point of view, but Lawrence is an emotional author in such a way that he can be extremely relatable to many people. Although he is a male author, the majority of his fans are women for reasons he understands through many perspectives during his time, and even today. There are many things that Lawrence had right and wrong about women. The main idea that he was right was that women are not required to dedicate themselves fully to a certain role, but that society makes them think that they must succeed in a specific role. A misconception that Lawrence had about women was that not all are the same when it comes to the type of roles they wish to take on as a woman, some may agree with the stereotypical lifestyle of women, and others want to make a change to become something other than what society labels them so that they are satisfied with their daily lives
