Essay / The Diary of a Social Butterfly - 1612
Moni Mohsin is a famous columnist and freelance writer from Lahore, Pakistan. His current writings are published in several renowned publications, one even owned by his own sister here in Pakistan, Jugnu Mohsin, called “Friday Times”, and others being; The Guardian, The Nation, The Times of India and The New York Times (Emirateslitfest). His first two novels, The End of Innocence and Duty Free, are both award-winning works (Emirateslitfest). The first novel is based on a sensitive and astonishing story centered on western Punjab during Pakistan's unstable period in the 1970s (Mukherjee), while the second is more of a satirical and humorous piece of writing based on a woman who helps her cousin to find him a suitable wife (Mohsin, Google Books). Moni belongs to a liberal and educated family background. During the dictatorship of General Zia-ul-Haq, as the political and social environment became a bit religiously extreme, she and her family felt uncomfortable during that time (Lau). Perhaps this is why she criticized Pakistan's politics and elite class so extensively in her journal, The Diary of a Social Butterfly. The diary is a satirical commentary from the perspective of a socialite. It is full of humor, irony and wit that makes the reader laugh. Moni maintained a periodicity while presenting the real events that happened between 2000 and 2008. The most important thing about this writing is the awkward voice of the protagonist which maintains the humor even while presenting the sad and horrible events of the diary. English and Urdu are also used which makes the writing unique and interesting. However, in his writing, the author...... middle of paper ...... th writing style. She used effective methods to approach her audience and it is safe to say that she was very successful. Only if the social criticism was less and the character of Butterfly a little more down-to-earth, this diary would have been more realistic and less critical in itself.
