  • Essay / 1950's Culture In Rebel Without A Cause By Nicholas Ray

“Education has become a matter of national defense,” and this is evident when students are taken to the planetarium to learn about space, alluding to how Sputnik was released by the Soviet Government (Norton 805). The 1950s culture in Rebel Without a Cause is based on conformity and the effects of parenting. Juvenile delinquency is the result of physiological problems that can be encountered due to lack of attention. Half a century later, some ideals remain the same, such as conformity, popularity, seeking support outside the home, but many have changed, such as more involved parents and more serious juvenile delinquency. Rebel Without a Cause served as a warning to future generations by representing the fears of the adult community and the norms of 1950s society, hoping that these issues will be resolved for the better.
