Essay / Nursing Metaparadigm: My Personal Philosophy of Nursing
The intention of this article is to reflect on my personal philosophy of nursing using the concepts of the nursing metaparadigm. When I was a nursing student, my philosophy was focused solely on patient care. However, this perspective on nursing has transformed overtime into a secondary aspect of nursing education and clinical experience. Nursing philosophy refers to “a statement of fundamental and universal assumptions, beliefs and principles about the nature of knowledge and thinking and about the nature of the entities represented in the metaparadigm” (McEwen and Wills, p.10 ). My personal nursing philosophies include providing safe, quality nursing care, maintaining patient health, managing resources and the environment, and career advancement. Additionally, there are different variations in many nursing theorists' views of the environment. A comparative analysis of nursing theories by Hanucharumkul (1989) shows that the perspectives of nursing theories on the environment are not related. Orem approached the environment in terms of development. It views the environment as a set of circumstances that inspire the person to grow through the setting of appropriate goals. It appears to refer to a person's external environment which includes physical and psychological characteristics. Using an anthropological approach, Leninger (2008) refers to environmental context as "the totality of a particular event, situation, or experiences that give meaning to people's expressions, interpretations, and social interactions within the context of particular physical, ecological, spiritual, socio-political and technological factors. cultural contexts” (p. 7).
