The movie The Maltese Falcon tells the story of a private detective who strives to unravel the mystery surrounding a black enameled bird known as the Maltese falcon. Samuel Spade, the protagonist of the story, is what we call a “hard-boiled” detective. Men like this rarely show a soft side (if they have one). Likewise, they are physically tough and frequently resort to guns or fists to get what they want. Additionally, they tend to be amoral, but with a code of honor of their own. The first element of the "tough" detective's personality is the fact that he rarely shows an affectionate side. Throughout the film, Sam Spade acts carefree and nonchalant. Nothing bothers him and he doesn't seem to care about anyone. He remains calm, serene and somewhat distant. He treats Brigit and Miles' wife brutally and uses them for his own purposes. After Miles' death, he avoids Mrs. Archer, although he has already made professions of love for her. All this to say that he shows a certain tenderness towards Brigit, but this is overcome by his desire to clear his customs....
