Essay / The Wiz Live: Movie Review: The Wizard of Oz - 1202
In many different scenes, dances were created to capture how each character was feeling in the scene they were in. For example, when the crow was being bullied while tied to the cross, Fatima created a dance to show him that he was finding his inner courage and was no longer afraid of birds. I loved when Dorothy and Scarecrow sang while walking down the yellow brick road because the dance conveyed the sensitivity of people uniquely experiencing the spirit of expression. The dance looked fun and vibrant, like most jazz dances we see today. One of the jazz styles covered in the film was bebop. Bebop was characterized in the 1940s as having a fast tempo and improvisation based on the structures of a situation that inspired the movement. I noticed that bebop was well displayed when Ne-Yo danced because of his complex technique, fast tempo, and improvisation while singing. This style of jazz suited the presentation of the film because it kept me as the audience engaged in each choreographed dance. The tempo being very fast, this allowed the movement to be ample and easy.
