Essay / Society in a Doll's House - 1367
They didn't know they lived in a doll's house. They maintained their image perfectly to the point that they believed everything they had was true. The dollhouse highlights the control exercised over them. By flaunting their perfect home, they naively submitted to the desires of society. They get to the point where they think they are in love with each other like it was meant to be, but in the end they break up and Nora is able to see through society's lies. “You never loved me. You only found it pleasant to be in love with me” (Ibsen 279), Nora then realizes what it all really was and is fully aware of what she herself feels. “I can’t do anything about it. I love you no more” (Ibsen 281), at this point Nora has severed ties with society and is ready to move forward despite all her pain. She recognizes that everything was not as perfect as she had always thought and then she saw that she had been living married for eight years to a simple stranger. Their so-called house was a mere cover for the truth hidden behind a closed wall.
