GEICO is an employee benefits insurance company established in 1936 and founded by Lillian and Leo Lillian Goodwin. The company was assured of providing accident protection to administrative representatives throughout the United States. GEICO was based on the idea that administrative representatives were safer and more financially reliable than the general population. With this kind of notion, GEICO was able to eliminate agents or middlemen for the operation of the business, thus saving significant amounts of money each year. The company was adept at passing these savings on to customers, representatives, and through advertising (GEICO, n.d.). The company was founded on ingenuity, diligence, development, strength and genuine hard work. From its humble beginnings in the midst of the Great Depression to the company's current place among the nation's top organizations, GEICO stands as a textbook example of the American example of overcoming adversity. The GEICO name represents a reversal of the organization's humble origins. The initiator, Leo Goodwin, initially focused on a clientele composed of United States civil servants and military personnel (GEICO, nd). Today, obviously, the organization has grown to provide security protection to a wide variety of clients, regardless of where they work, whether through the private sector or government. In 1996, GEICO became a wholly owned subsidiary of Berkshire Hathaway, led by Warren Buffett, one of the country's top speculators.
