Essay / Advances In Biotechnology - 1099
Introduction: Recent advancements in science and technology have shown great impact on all areas of life. One of the most important areas of science and technology is biotechnology. Advances in biotechnology have provided solutions to many problems that the human race faced, including feeding a vast population, but at the same time, they also pose new threats and challenges to human beings. This short report discusses the pros and cons of expanded applications of biotechnology, particularly the impacts of genetically modified crops that appeared on the market in the 1990s. According to Wikipedia, the definition and process of genetically modified crops are summarized as follows: “Genetically modified (GM). ) foods are foods derived from genetically modified organisms. Genetically modified organisms have had specific changes introduced into their DNA through genetic engineering, using a process of cisgenesis or transgenesis. These techniques are much more precise than mutagenesis (selection by mutation) where an organism is exposed to radiation or chemicals to create a non-specific but stable change. Other techniques by which humans modify food organisms include selective breeding (plant and animal breeding) and somaclonal variation. The following is a table of a summary of genetically modified foods approved by the FDA for human consumption. 1)Potato (4)Cotton ...... middle of paper ...... areas (3). In addition, it also affects the local ecosystem of fertile land, affecting the properties of insects and soil, etc. As these genetically modified species are disease free, they therefore have a longer life, posing a persistent threat to the environment, through cross-pollination and by affecting the normal flora of the area (2). One of the examples of such a threat is the genetically modified mouse species, developed by an Australian scientist to control the growth of the mouse population, but which resulted in the complete destruction of the entire species. This example perfectly demonstrates the extent of the negative effects of this technology (2, 3). Conclusion Although genetically modified crops offer a wide range of benefits, they also pose very serious threats. Therefore, the use of this technology should be discouraged and alternative methods should be discovered..
