  • Essay / Reflection Delta Cotillion - 851

On May 3, 2014, my local church held a meet and greet for all the girls attending the assembly. We all got into groups of two first to introduce ourselves, then we took turns. The meeting lasted about an hour and a half and then it was time to leave. “How did you enjoy today’s session,” Mom said. “It’s been good so far, we’ve just had a chance to meet everyone.” Over the summer, we had information sessions on empowering ourselves and valuing community. Some of our sessions included topics like developing healthy relationships, fashion and beauty, preparing for college, budgeting, getting scholarships, and much more. A session called Love and Healthy Relationships really helped me hold myself accountable. During the session we talked about what it was like to have a good relationship with our friends and knowing all the qualities of having a good boyfriend. One of our Delta mentors asked, “What qualities do you look for in a man?” We all smiled and looked at each other. We all answered her question, and then she gave us her perspective as a grown woman. Overall, the conversations were very important and had an impact on the way some of us think on a daily basis.
