The impact of computers on educationThe introduction of computers in education has had a positive impact on the school in terms of student achievement, administrative and teaching methods. Computers have dramatically changed student achievement. School computers today are equipped with educational software that greatly facilitates learning. From the first year, computing is part of students' daily activities. In early grades, computer games are used to encourage young students to learn. During my tutoring experience at St. Mary's Elementary School this year, I observed students playing a variety of games. The games cover a wide range of topics and the learning is interpreted by students as fun and a great way to start their schooling. A recent article, Using Computers to Create Constructivist Learning Environments: Impact on Pedagogy and Achievement, conducted a study with twenty-three high school physics classes and thirteen teachers. They were examined to determine the extent to which computers can support teaching and student success. The results suggest that computers can significantly change both teaching methods and student outcomes. “Overall, this study suggests that computers can be used to help teachers create a more constructivist, albeit challenging, learning environment. Attempting to change one's pedagogy and at the same time integrate technology into the classroom requires considerable effort on the part of teachers, both philosophically and technically. Computers have had a significant impact on students' research abilities. Expanding Access to Computers is an article that describes how local businesses are refurbishing computers that are no longer needed for students who previously did not have a personal computer. It took place in Stamford Connecticut and the program is called TechCycle. Computers provide the Internet, which is a key research tool and one of the best sources of information imaginable. Before computers were introduced into schools, all or most research was done in a library. Today, even the library is managed on a computer, which brings me to the administrative advantages. If one looks at Lake Superior State University, one can certainly notice how computers have had a positive impact on the operation of the school. In the past, if you wanted to find a book, you had to manually search the index catalog. This was time consuming and a challenge to maintain by keeping the cards in the correct places..
